It is windy today. The wheel of misfortune is spinning and so are the recycling bins of well-meaning citizens. The blue box containers are whisked out of the driveway and down the street. The contents of these containers dump meaningless flotsam and jetsam . Mother Nature rains on her own parade. I have watched a shopping bag and a cardboard box sail down the street in a riotous race to a front yard of an obsessive compulsive gardener.
Newspapers fly from bins like flocks of birds. These carefully recycled items are stored in neat garages all week. Recycling days are roulette games with Mother Nature spinning the wheel. Today the environment and the open recycling bins are in a garbage gamble. It appears that the wind has the upper hand today.
A flock of newspapers has just landed on my front lawn. The pizza box and the shopping bag are racing to the end of the street and I can see other contenders in this race…a cereal box and a shoe box. The wind is picking up this morning to gale force, and the recycling truck will drive right over this racing refuse soon, to empty already empty containers. I just saw a Christmas tree slide past our house, shedding needles and tinsel breaking the speed limit to join the box, shopping bag, cereal and shoe boxes circling at the end of the street. The newspapers have the day, however, because in this wind they can fly!
P.S. The garbage trucks went through and emptied the real garbage bag containers; making a heroic effort not to crush the expensive garbage recycling bins. Now the wind gusts have hit maximum speed, and a herd of bins and cans are spinning down the street. Today, watching the street has been more fun than I have had in a while. It is true and tragic at the same time.
